Questions from the common room

What do I need to play?

A Windows PC, or a Linux PC running the game through Proton, and a legitimate copy of Hogwarts Legacy from Steam or the Epic Games Store. PC Game Pass support is experimental since 1.10.0. The launcher looks for Steam first, then Epic, then Game Pass.

Can I play right now?

ArcaneMP is pre-release software. The latest verified testing release is 1.10.0, published 24 October 2026. Get the complete client archive from the team or server owner, then use the launcher and a server with the matching build and channel.

How many players can join?

Servers allow 32 players by default. Owners can raise maxplayers in server.json up to 128; a higher value runs with 128. The public server list shows each server’s advertised capacity.

Is it free?

The mod is free to use; you need your own copy of Hogwarts Legacy. A server host may have its own infrastructure costs. Public listing on the MafiaHub masterlist is free.

Can we play the story together?

Shared or co-op campaign progression remains at the research stage. The current experience is a multiplayer sandbox with exploration, spells, flight, voice, and server-defined gameplay.

Is there PvP?

Yes, when a server turns it on. Out of the box nobody can hurt anybody. A server’s scripts decide who can fight with rules, pairs, PvP flags, and teams, from one-on-one duels to the game’s own wand link.

Does proximity voice work?

Yes. Positional voice is implemented. V is the default push-to-talk key, and normal speech has an approximately 25-metre range. The server configures normal, whisper, and shout ranges.

How do I update?

Start HogwartsMPLauncher.exe and let its channel update check finish. It may restart itself while replacing files. Dedicated servers are updated separately by their owners. Keep client and server builds and channels matched.

Why does a listed server reject me?

The masterlist is an announcement directory, not a connection test. Check the advertised build, release channel, required password, and any required game mods with the owner. Older servers may not accept the current client.

Can I launch a server from my browser?

Click a direct-connect address on the Servers page to open its hogwartsmp:// link. This requires the ArcaneMP launcher to be installed and registered for the protocol. If it does not open, use the in-game browser or copy the address into Direct Connect.

Do players install the server’s scripts?

No. Client-side resources are delivered during connection. Supported server-required CurseForge content is reconciled during the handshake. Keep the complete client archive together and do not manually copy the server resource tree into it.

Can I host on Linux?

Yes. Dedicated servers support Windows x64 and Linux x86-64. Use a matching release bundle or its version-tagged container image. Players can run the client on Windows, or on Linux through Proton since 1.10.0.

Do I need a database for hosting?

The bare runtime does not need one. Public servers should use HMP Foundation, which requires MySQL 8.x or MariaDB 10.6+ for persistent characters, inventory, and other gameplay systems. The mod repository’s resources are not a supported public-server pack.

How do I list my server?

Register it in the MafiaHub Servers dashboard, place its private key in server-token, open your UDP game port, and restart. The server announces automatically. An empty token keeps the server unlisted but still permits direct connections.

Can I keep persistent data in a state bag?

A replicated state bag shares session state; it is not a durable database. The old key/value storage API was removed in 1.3.0. Use Foundation’s supported persistence systems or a deliberate server-side persistence layer.

Is this an official game mode?

No. ArcaneMP (formerly Hogwarts MP) is an independent fan-made project, not affiliated with Warner Bros., Avalanche Software, or Portkey Games. It is pre-release software, and compatibility and functionality can change.

How can I help?

Test a matching client/server build, report reproducible issues, or build a resource. Include your version, server, approximate time, reproduction steps, and the relevant client log. Remove tokens, passwords, private addresses, and other personal data before sharing.
